About the Green Map System |
Wendy Brawer founded the Green Map System in 1995 to identify, promote, and link eco-resources within cities. Since then, over 150 cities in 50 countries on 6 continents have created their own Green Maps. Green Maps strengthen awareness of and connection to the urban ecology through locally created visual representations of hometown environments.
Groups of volunteer mapmakers work together to create Green Maps of their home places -- cities, rural areas and regions. Green Maps employ a common set of icons symbolizing a range of environmental sites -- everything from recycling and reuse sites to solar energy locations to wildlife watching and polluted areas. The maps illuminate the interconnections between society, nature and the built environment.
